Our approach

The use of automation tools is widespread throughout the testing industry. However, for every successful implementation of automation there are many more unsuccessful implementations, resulting in the automation tools becoming 'shelf-ware'. For this reason we have devised a methodology to reduce the risk of failure and maximise the return on investment (ROI) in automation tools.

ROI is maximised when automation scripts are re-used; however applications are liable to change throughout their lifecycle, greatly affecting the reusability of scripts. The StarBase Automation Methodology (SAM) solves this problem by ensuring scripts are robust, re-usable and easily maintained.

We work from the outset to help you to understand all the critical elements involved in automation testing, such as:

  • What are your automation goals?
  • How much does current testing cost?
  • Are you getting the right results?
  • What do you need from a proof of value?

SAM is a four stage methodology that structures the automation process

Plan

Test objectives are identified and defined, including which test scripts will be automated, KPI's, timescales and resources required. This is documented and forms the basis of the project plan.

Script

Identified tests are scripted and then rigorously tested.  Scripts are enhanced to include error checking, verification points and context checks to ensure they are robust and accurate.

Test

Automated tests are run in test sets. Major problems are identified quickly and clients get an early view of potential issues.

Report

A comprehensive report is provided that documents the test results and includes recommendations based on project objectives.
