Testing is essential for ensuring that key systems can scale to meet business demands; but testing itself is often not well carried out, and this puts projects at risk. The main reasons why testing fails are a lack of specialist knowledge and resources, changing business deadlines, or underestimation of the scale of the testing required.

At StarBase we see a number of clients coming to us because a testing project has over-run and they cannot see how to get it back on track. A recent client was facing this situation: their team was jaded and lacking direction, and the project was at severe risk of missing further milestones and failing to meet the business critical completion date. Costs were spiralling.

The challenge set for StarBase with this kind of project is ‘be pro-active, own the testing-related issues, galvanise the existing team, provide direction, and deliver to the deadlines’.

The key to our success is the speed at which we can get failing projects back on track. By day three of the project, not only was there a clear path ahead and a resumption of momentum, StarBase had already added significant value, recommending changes to some of the core application components that would later result in one key business SLA being achieved for the first time.

By the end of the engagement, StarBase had re-energised and driven the existing team to meet the key testing milestones according to plan. Our work gave the client the information they needed to sign off on the full deployment of their solution, meaning that the business-critical upgrade was assured in time for the go-live deadline.

Jon joined StarBase as a graduate in 2011. His main areas of expertise are in using HP performance testing tools such as ALM and LoadRunner, but he also has experience using IBM’s Rational Test Workbench (formerly Green Hat Tester), which he has used when working for high profile clients in sectors including financial services. He has also been involved in research into new testing tools and methodology and has developed training materials for newer recruits to the company.
