Save and Manage your Spooled Files Offline
Introduction
The SB/Spool Archiver provides an easy and convenient method for saving important reports to
tape or cartridge. It is easy to use and can be run fully automated, so you can install it and forget
it, or integrate it with your other work.
The current version V2R4.5 improves the searching and displaying of archived spooled files by
providing new archive file search capabilities and improving the existing display functionality:
-
The new Scan Archive File Contents (SCNARCF) commands searches the spooled files within the specified archive for a user specified scan string. The spooled files that contained the specified scan string are listed on a display that allows the user to restore or display them. The Scan Archive Files Contents (SCNARCF) command is available as option 10 on the Work with Archive Files (WRKARCF) display or from the command line.
-
The updated Display Archived Spooled File function displays the selected spooled file using the following process:
-
If the original spooled file is available this is displayed.
-
If any restored versions of the spooled file are available, they are displayed. Note: Logging spooled file restores is controlled by archive value #LOGSPLRST.
-
If the archive file is online, the spooled file is restored to the current job and displayed. Note: Automatic spooled file restore is controlled by archive value #RSTSPLF.
-
The raw spooled file data, in its archive format is displayed. Note: Raw spooled file data display is controlled by archive value #DSPRAWDTA.
SBA v2r4.5 also improves the handling of archive files:
-
If the archive spooled file function archives no spooled files to an archive file, and the archive file is empty, the SB/Spool Archiver gives you the ability to automatically delete the empty archive file. This is controlled by the Automatically Delete Empty Archive Files (#DLTARCF) archive value.
-
The expiry dates on an archive file are now logically maintained. If an archive is performed to a file with a longer expiry than the archive command specifies, the expiry on the archive file is kept. If an archive is performed to a file with a shorter expiry than the archive command specifies, the expiry on the archive file is extended to that specified on the command.
Product Overview
Many companies now have a legal requirement to retain computer generated reports for a
number of years. Others find that reports often go missing, are damaged, or additional copies
are required within a few days of being printed. Retaining spooled output on your computer
is wasteful in terms of disk space and machine performance and does not guarantee that the
reports are safe, because they are not saved by the standard IBM save commands.
Some companies opt for microfiche as the mechanism for storing reports long term. Again this is
costly and does not allow you to reprint the whole of the document, should this be required by
your company or your auditors.
The Spool Archiver provides the mechanism to save spooled output to tape with the security of
knowing that you will be able to restore and reprint it as the original document.
It can be customised to your company's requirements by use of the extensive list of archive
values available to you. This enables you to be in complete control of what, when, where and how
your spool files will be archived.
New customers can download the current version and trial the software free of charge

Benefits
-
Cost effective - Important reports can be held on tape or cartridge and reprinted when required. This will satisfy your requirements for long term report retention, is cheaper than Fiche and more easily reprinted should the need arise.
-
Saves disk space - By freeing disk space normally used for keeping several days' reports on the system. This can also save you money by deferring or preventing a disk upgrade. Get an idea of how much you could save on your system by displaying the size of the library QSPL on your system now!
-
Improved machine performance - Improves the performance of your machine by the system having to maintain track of fewer jobs.
-
Flexible - Parameter driven, so it does what you want, when and how you want it. You tell it what to archive and how long to keep it, etc.
-
Industry standard - It conforms to SAA standards for screen designs, so training requirements are minimal.
-
Tape management - A built in tape management system ensures that the software only uses the tapes that you have told it to use. This will prevent the wrong tape being overwritten and maybe destroying a vital backup.
-
Easy integration - Fully command driven, so that it can be integrated into your existing menus or scheduling system with ease, or use the menu system provided which contains comprehensive on-line help text.
-
One step to reprint reports - Using the directory of reports processed by the Spool Archiver, reports can be easily selected for reprinting using the powerful selection criteria. Restore a single spool file or all the spool files archived together in a single step.
-
Save time - Once the system is set up it will run automatically saving important reports for you. You can just forget it's there.
Features
-
On-line help text - This is available to make using and learning the software easier. Makes use of the latest API's (Application Program Interfaces) - thus improving the Spool Archiver performance and flexibility.
-
Command driven - Gives you the flexibility to integrate the running of the Spool Archiver into your existing operations procedures.
-
Automated - Can run completely automated.
-
On-line log - A log is kept of all spool files archived.
-
Status messages - These are issued to the screen (on-line) or the job log (batch) to keep the user informed as to the processing taking place within the software.
